WHY I MADE THIS December 29, 2025
I visit Japan often, but my Japanese stayed embarrassingly low. I could listen and understand bits, but reading? Completely lost.
Most learners finish hiragana and katakana in a week. It took me a month. And even after finally getting those down, there's kanji waiting - 2,000 characters minimum to read everyday Japanese. That number haunted me.
I tried apps, textbooks, YouTube. My motivation would spike then drop off. I'm not a good learner at all.
Roguelikes keep me coming back - Wildfrost, Monster Train, Slay the Spire, Balatro. I can remember combos, builds, and mechanics from those games easily. The "one more run" feeling is addictive. What if learning felt like that? I keep thought about that.
So I built Kana Conbini, a roguelike where you run a Japanese convenience store. Serve customers, earn coins, buy buffs, survive as long as you can. Every customer order is a Japanese character you need to recognize. Chase highscores and pick up hiragana, katakana, vocabulary along the way. Hope you enjoy it!
